Florian Geyer

Spearmen ho! Forward go!
On the castle roof let the Red Cock crow
Spearmen ho! Forward go!
On the castle roof let the Red Cock crow

When Adam dug and Eve did toil
Heia o-ho
No princes trespassed on their soil
Heia o-ho

Bold Geyer’s men their arrows shoot
The knights are laid low
His banner bears a peasant’s boot
To stamp out the foe

The noble’s only God is pride
Heia o-ho
The Holy Scripture is our guide
Heia o-ho

We’re beaten though our cause is right
Heia o-ho
Our sons will carry on the fight
Heia o-ho

Few have ever heard of the extraordinary SS calvalry called the Florian Geyer, named after the historic folk hero.
Thankyou for raising this ancient name in remembrance and praise.

  2. The words in this verse, are NOT ‘Hei-a-ho.
When Adam dug and Eve did toil
    Heia o-ho
No princes trespassed on their soil
    Heia o-ho

The German text clearly has, Kyrie Eleison, which is GREEK.

It means “Lord have Mercy” and comes from the Roman Mass.
    It is a Christian prayer.

The rest of the verses are nonsense heia-ho.

  3. Fr. John – I spoke with a young lady who teaches German and does translation work. She told me these lyrics were pretty good.

  4. Sorry if I came across rather strong. But the song words, and the text lyrics did not match. And, when I heard “Kyrie, Eleison,” I said, “WHAT?” It’s merely the liturgist in my jumping to the fore. Mea culpa. LOL

Whilst stationed in Giebelstadt with Charlie, 6/52 ADA, I went to the Florian Geyer gasthaus on a more than weekly basis. Now I know some of who that place was named after.
